Adidas Cuts Roles in India Tech Team as Gurugram Employees Face December Deadline

Adidas has reduced roles within its India Technology organisation as part of a restructuring intended to simplify operations and align the business with changing requirements.

The German sportswear company confirmed the job cuts but did not disclose the number of employees affected. Adidas said the changes would impact less than 20% of its India Technology organisation.

However, people familiar with the situation cited by the report estimated that 350 or more employees at the Gurugram India Tech Hub may have been affected. The hub has a workforce of around 700, according to the report. The figures have not been independently verified, and Adidas has not confirmed the reported number.

Software engineers, data scientists and data engineers are among the roles reportedly impacted.

Changes Announced at Gurugram Tech Hub

Employees were informed about the restructuring during a town hall meeting on September 15. According to people familiar with the process, affected employees were divided into two groups.

Some employees received exit letters on September 15. Others have been asked to continue working until December 15, with their responsibilities understood to include completing handovers to teams at other technology hubs.

Employees in the second group have also been given time to explore other positions within Adidas. Those who do not secure another internal role by December 15 have reportedly been told that date will be their final working day.

Details regarding severance packages, notice pay and redeployment assistance could not be independently confirmed.

Adidas' Statement

Adidas said the role reductions are part of efforts to align its operating model with the evolving needs of the business. The company said the changes are intended to simplify parts of its organisation and strengthen critical capabilities.

The company also said it remains committed to supporting affected employees through the transition. Adidas stated that India continues to be strategically important and that its Technology Hub remains involved in supporting growth, innovation and digital transformation.

The company did not confirm the reported figure of 350 or more affected employees or provide details about the specific number and types of roles eliminated.

Impact on India Technology Operations

Adidas' Gurugram office includes its local marketing organisation and one of its Global Engineering Tech Hubs. The company has also expanded its operations in India, including the opening of a Global Business Services centre in Chennai in 2024.

According to the company's website, nearly 650 people were working across its Gurugram and Chennai hubs. The latest restructuring appears to be focused on the Technology organisation.

For affected employees, the next steps vary depending on their group. Some have already received exit letters, while others have until December 15 to complete handovers and explore internal opportunities.
