BUSINESS
Rising fuel prices and ongoing geopolitical tensions are now significantly disrupting global aviation operations. Air India’s international flight cuts highlight how airlines are struggling with higher operating costs, restricted airspace, and longer flight routes caused by the Middle East crisis. The reductions are expected to impact summer travel demand across the US, Europe, and Asia while increasing pressure on ticket prices and airline profitability.
Air India has suspended and reduced several international routes between June and August 2026 due to soaring aviation fuel prices and ongoing airspace restrictions linked to geopolitical tensions.
According to aviation analytics firm:
- OAG
Air India’s international capacity has dropped sharply compared to last year, creating major disruption across North America, Europe, and Asia routes.
Major US Routes Affected
Several important international routes have been reduced or temporarily suspended:
- Delhi → Chicago flights suspended completely
- Delhi → San Francisco reduced from 10 weekly flights to 7
- Delhi → Toronto reduced from 10 weekly flights to 5
- Delhi → Newark flights suspended
- Mumbai → New York (JFK) suspended temporarily
Europe Routes Reduced
Air India also scaled down multiple Europe operations:
- Delhi → Paris reduced from 14 weekly flights to 7
- Reduced flights to:
- Rome
- Zurich
- Vienna
- Copenhagen
- Milan
Asia Flights Also Impacted
The airline has reduced several Asia-Pacific routes as operational costs continue rising.
Key reductions include:
- Delhi → Singapore reduced from 24 weekly flights to 14
- Mumbai → Singapore reduced from 14 to 7
- Chennai → Singapore suspended until August
- Reduced services to:
- Bangkok
- Kuala Lumpur
- Kathmandu
- Colombo
Additional suspensions:
- Mumbai → Dhaka suspended until August
- Delhi → Male suspended temporarily
International Capacity Falls Sharply
OAG data showed:
- April 2026 international flights:
- 1,987 flights
- April 2025:
- 2,549 flights
This represents:
- Nearly 22% decline year-over-year
Further cuts are expected during June 2026.
Why Flights Are Being Reduced
The airline cited:
- Record-high jet fuel prices
- Restricted airspace
- Longer rerouted flight paths
- Operational cost pressures
The ongoing Middle East conflict and disruptions around critical air corridors have significantly increased airline operating expenses globally.
Passenger Advisory
Air India stated affected passengers will receive:
- Alternative flight options
- Free rescheduling
- Full refunds where applicable
Travellers flying during:
- June
- July
- August
have been advised to check their booking status directly with the airline.
