Anthropic is creating a new team focused on examining how artificial intelligence could affect legal systems, democratic institutions, and public decision-making. The initiative expands the company’s research efforts beyond economic impacts and into questions surrounding governance and the rule of law.
Anthropic is expanding its research efforts with the creation of a new team dedicated to exploring the relationship between artificial intelligence and the rule of law.
The new group, called the “AI Rule & Law” team, will focus on understanding how AI technologies could influence key democratic institutions and legal systems.
According to Anthropic, the initiative will examine questions surrounding executive power, courts, elections, and broader public decision-making processes. The effort represents a shift from the company’s previous research focus on AI’s economic impact toward a deeper exploration of governance and democracy-related issues.
The team will be led by Matthew Botvinick, a Resident Fellow at Yale Law School. Announcing the initiative, Botvinick said the goal is to study how artificial intelligence may affect the institutions and public deliberation that support constitutional democracy.
Anthropic has previously conducted research on the economic implications of artificial intelligence, including its impact on jobs and productivity. The new team broadens that work by investigating how AI could shape legal and political systems in the future.
The announcement comes as Anthropic continues to grow its presence within the AI industry and expands its efforts to examine the wider societal effects of advanced artificial intelligence technologies.
