Australia's hiring market showed only a slight slowdown in June, with job advertisements remaining higher than historical averages. Demand stayed resilient in select industries even as recruitment softened across retail and some service-related occupations.
Australia's job advertisement market recorded a modest decline in June, indicating that hiring demand is easing gradually as higher borrowing costs continue to affect the economy.
According to data released by ANZ and employment platform Indeed, job advertisements fell 0.2% in June compared with May, following a 2% increase in the previous month. Despite the monthly decline, job ads were 0.5% higher than a year earlier and remained around 15% above the long-term average.
Hiring demand strengthened for nurses and real estate professionals during the month. In contrast, vacancies in retail, food preparation, and management recorded notable declines. Demand for logistics-related positions stabilized after falling over the previous two months, while opportunities for drivers continued to decrease.
Separate labour market data released recently showed that Australia added 40,300 net jobs in May, recovering from the decline reported in April. The unemployment rate also improved to 4.4% from 4.5%.
