The broadcaster is restructuring its workforce and operations to meet a £500 million savings target. The move comes as the BBC faces increasing competition from digital and streaming platforms while preparing for future funding negotiations.
BBC Plans Major Workforce Reduction as Part of £500 Million Savings Program
The BBC will cut approximately 550 jobs across its organisation, including positions in its news and content divisions, as part of a long-term cost-reduction strategy aimed at saving £500 million over the next three years.
The broadcaster said the latest measures are expected to generate roughly £160 million in savings. Additional cost-cutting initiatives, including reductions within corporate functions, are expected to be announced later.
The changes come as the BBC works to adapt to changing audience habits, with more viewers, especially younger people, turning to streaming services and digital media platforms.
Matt Brittin, who became the BBC's director-general earlier this year, is leading the transformation effort. The restructuring within the news division will involve the closure of some established programmes, consolidation of production teams, and a review of senior presenter roles.
The BBC reported a workforce of about 21,500 employees as of March last year. Over the next three years, total job reductions across the organisation are expected to reach between 1,800 and 2,000 positions.
The broadcaster is also preparing for discussions on its future funding model ahead of the expiration of its Royal Charter at the end of 2027. Possible options include continuing the television licence fee system, introducing subscription-based services, or increasing reliance on advertising revenue.
