Charles Schwab's expansion adds to India's growing global capability centre ecosystem, with Hyderabad set to gain new technology, engineering and operational roles. The move comes even as AI-driven efficiency efforts are making some companies more cautious about workforce expansion.

U.S. financial services company Charles Schwab plans to increase the workforce at its recently opened global capability centre in Hyderabad to around 2,000 employees by the end of 2027.

The company intends to expand hiring in stages, with roughly 500 employees expected to be added during the centre's first year. The Hyderabad facility will support Charles Schwab's U.S. operations through technology development, engineering and operational work.

According to a state government statement, the company also plans to move some technology work currently carried out by contractors in India to its own new centre.

The expansion comes as businesses increasingly use artificial intelligence to improve efficiency, particularly in software and research and development. While some established companies are restructuring their workforces, new companies continue to set up global capability centres and build teams in India.

India has become a major hub for global capability centres, with more than 2,100 such centres employing about 2.36 million people, according to a 2026 Nasscom-Zinnov report. Financial services companies account for about one-fourth of the country's overall GCC workforce.

Telangana, where Hyderabad is located, already hosts more than 475 global centres and expects another 100 to be added over the next year.
