India's white-collar recruitment expanded 14% year-on-year in October, powered by a 39% surge in production and manufacturing roles alongside a 32% rise in AI/ML hiring, according to the Naukri JobSpeak Index. While the low festive base from October 2024 contributed to the headline jump to 2,836 points, sectoral demand revealed a sharp operational pivot: automobile firms and industrial majors hired heavily for R&D, supply chain, and plant operations while traditional IT software hiring grew just 5%.
Corporate hiring momentum across India's formal economy recorded a strong rebound at the start of the third quarter. The Naukri JobSpeak Index climbed 14% year-on-year in October to touch 2,836 points, up from 2,480 a year earlier, driven by aggressive capacity additions across industrial manufacturing, automotive engineering, and specialized artificial intelligence competencies.
While part of the double-digit expansion reflects a favorable base effect—since Diwali holidays suppressed recruitment activity during October of the previous year—the underlying data underscores a decisive structural shift: Indian enterprises are prioritizing physical production, hardware R&D, and supply chain infrastructure over generic front-office sales.
The Manufacturing & Automotive Hiring Spurt The automobile sector led aggregate sectoral expansion with an overall 36% surge in white-collar headcount requisitions, reflecting an intense engineering focus:
-
Building Over Selling: Within the automotive sector, hiring for R&D leaped 53%, procurement and supply chain roles surged 50%, and shop-floor production functions grew 41%, compared to subdued 7% growth in sales and marketing.
-
Heavy Industry Alignment: Industrial machinery saw a 40% jump in production roles and a 41% rise in quality assurance (QA). Construction, engineering, and metals recorded a 33% increase in plant production positions and a 25% bump in project and program management.
-
FMCG Production Pivot: Fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) grew a modest 6% overall, but hiring for core manufacturing functions jumped 40%, while sales requisitions contracted by 5%.
"Some of October’s growth reflects last year’s festive-season base, and we should read it in that light. What’s encouraging is the kind of hiring we’re seeing. Manufacturing companies are building capacity, and demand for AI skills remains strong, indicative of the selective, fundamentals-led nature of hiring demand." — Hitesh Oberoi, CEO, Info Edge (India) Ltd
The IT Bifurcation: AI and GCCs Outpace Traditional Software The technology recruitment landscape continues to bifurcate between specialized automation and legacy engineering:
-
The IT Services Drag: The IT/software services segment grew at a sluggish 5%, while functional hiring for general software engineering and routine software QA inched up by just 1%.
-
Specialized High-Growth Pockets: Demand for dedicated AI/ML professionals jumped 32%, while multinational Global Capability Centres (GCCs) posted an 18% recruitment increase, absorbing technical talent into captive centers of excellence.
BFSI and BPO Gains: Business Process Outsourcing (BPO/ITeS) registered 17% growth, followed by Banking, Financial Services, and Insurance (BFSI) at 16%.
Hyderabad and Pune Lead Metropolitan Expansion Geographic hiring patterns favored high-tech manufacturing and enterprise capability corridors:
-
Top-Performing Cities: Hyderabad led all major metros with a 15% increase in white-collar job postings, closely followed by Pune at 14% and Delhi-NCR at 13%.
-
Steady Growth Hubs: Tech capitals Bengaluru and Mumbai each grew by 12%, while Chennai expanded 11%. Hiring in Kolkata remained flat over the same period.
The October findings highlight that corporate India's talent strategy is firmly fundamentals-led, with balance sheets channeled toward factory floor capacity, supply-chain resilience, and high-tier artificial intelligence architecture.
