East Tampa Emerges as Key Hub in Manufacturing Growth Strategy

Manufacturing Leads Continue to Grow

Manufacturing now represents the largest share of new business prospects tracked by the Tampa Bay Economic Development Council (EDC), accounting for more than one-third of its active project pipeline. The sector has experienced notable growth in interest since 2020.

Despite that momentum, manufacturing projects are less likely to select the Tampa region compared with companies from other industries. According to EDC officials, the area lacks some of the support systems manufacturers typically seek when evaluating expansion opportunities.

Building an Industrial Ecosystem

Craig Richard, president and CEO of the Tampa Bay EDC, said manufacturers often prioritize access to workforce training, educational pathways, and business support resources before committing to a location.

To address those needs, the EDC is directing attention toward East Tampa, where industrial land remains available for future development. The strategy centers on preserving industrial opportunities while encouraging job creation and workforce development along the Columbus Drive corridor.

Innovation Center Proposed

A proposed East Tampa Innovation Center is a major component of the plan. The project would provide manufacturing incubation space, workforce training programs, and support services for businesses. Planning and feasibility work for the initiative is currently underway.

The effort is being led by Opportunity Tampa Bay Inc., working alongside Integral Florida as part of a larger redevelopment vision for the area.

Supporting Jobs and Investment

Project leaders say the goal is to protect industrial opportunities that can generate long-term employment and economic growth. Plans include a mixed-use approach that combines housing, workforce development resources, and business support facilities.

The innovation center is intended to help emerging companies grow and eventually expand into nearby industrial sites while creating stronger connections between local residents and careers in manufacturing and construction.

Economic development officials also view private investment as a critical factor in the area's revitalization. The broader objective is not only to attract manufacturers to Hillsborough County but also to create employment opportunities closer to East Tampa communities.
