India’s Data Centre Expansion Drives Hiring Across Technical and Non-Technical Roles

India’s growing data centre capacity is generating employment opportunities across a wider range of roles, not just traditional technology positions. According to a report from Indeed Hiring Lab, data centre-related jobs represented 1.3% of all job postings in August, compared with 1.0% during the same period a year earlier.

The increasing adoption of artificial intelligence is contributing to demand for larger data centre infrastructure in the country. While software positions made up 28% of data centre-related postings in FY26, hiring demand also extended to management, engineering, sales and project management roles.

Indeed Senior Economist for APAC Callam Pickering said data centres require workers across engineering, project management and business operations. He added that as investment in the sector develops, its wider impact on employment is expected to become more visible in the labour market.

India’s overall job market also showed improvement in August. Job postings on Indeed rose 0.2% during the month and were 7.4% higher than a year earlier. They remained 85% above pre-pandemic levels. However, the report primarily reflects formal-sector recruitment and does not represent India’s entire labour market, where informal employment continues to account for a significant share.

Hiring growth in recent months has largely come from sectors outside technology. Job postings increased in nearly 80% of occupations over the past three months. Childcare recorded 27% growth, followed by nursing at 23%, pharmacy at 20%, and physicians and surgeons at 17%. Dental positions and medical technician roles also increased by 16% and 14%, respectively.

Technology hiring has weakened during the same period. Job postings for IT infrastructure, operations and support declined 20%, while software development postings fell 19%. Data and analytics roles decreased 14%, and IT systems and solutions postings dropped 7.6%.
