India’s data-centre expansion is creating a growing demand for infrastructure linked to AI and digital services. While the facilities themselves may require relatively limited operational staff, the wider ecosystem around them could support a much larger number of jobs.
India is rapidly expanding its data-centre infrastructure to support its growing artificial intelligence ambitions. Billions of dollars are being invested in data-centre projects across states including Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Karnataka.
Although these facilities represent some of the technology sector’s largest capital investments, the employment impact may extend well beyond the people directly working inside data centres.
India’s data-centre capacity is expected to increase significantly in the coming years as demand for cloud computing, AI, data localisation and digital services grows.
JM Financial estimates that India may need around 5 GW of colocation capacity by 2030. This could require about $20 billion in additional investment in data-centre capacity, along with an estimated $60 billion for cloud infrastructure such as servers.
The government is also viewing the sector as a source of skilled employment. In May 2026, Union minister Jitendra Singh said India’s data-centre capacity could increase from around 1.5 GW to nearly 6.5 GW by 2030 and generate close to one lakh engineering jobs. These roles could include work related to AI systems, cooling technologies, smart grids, renewable-energy integration and advanced digital infrastructure.
However, data centres are different from traditional factories. While their construction can involve investments worth thousands of crores and create substantial activity, the number of employees required after a facility becomes operational can be relatively small.
Google’s Visakhapatnam Project
Google’s planned AI data-centre project in Visakhapatnam highlights the scale of India’s data-centre expansion.
Google has committed around $15 billion over five years towards a 1-GW hyperscale data centre and AI hub in Andhra Pradesh. According to a Union government release, the project is expected to create 5,000–6,000 direct jobs and 20,000–30,000 total jobs in the state, while generating around ₹10,000 crore in revenue for Andhra Pradesh.
Andhra Pradesh IT Minister Nara Lokesh later said the project could generate close to two lakh jobs, reflecting the wider ecosystem expected to grow around the investment.
The broader employment impact is not limited to jobs within Google’s data centre. It also includes activities expected to develop around areas such as AI, cloud computing, cybersecurity, infrastructure and related industries.
