CAREERS
Tighter immigration requirements and slower NHS international recruitment are reducing opportunities for Indian nurses seeking careers in the UK. The shift is also prompting some nurses already in Britain to reconsider their long-term plans, while potentially encouraging more nursing talent to remain in India.
For Indian nurses, particularly those from Kerala, the UK has long been seen as a route to professional development, better financial opportunities and international experience. However, tighter immigration rules, greater scrutiny of employers and slower international hiring are making that pathway increasingly uncertain.
Agimol Pradeep, a Kerala-born nurse who moved to the UK almost three decades ago, built a career that includes serving as a Senior Transplant Coordinator at King’s College Hospital and as an Honorary Senior Lecturer at the University of Salford. She believes the opportunities available to a new generation of Indian nurses are becoming more limited.
The UK is moving to reduce migration and its reliance on overseas healthcare recruitment while giving greater priority to domestically trained workers. Changes have included stricter sponsorship compliance, higher English-language requirements and increased costs for employers recruiting workers internationally.
Health and Care Worker visa applications from main applicants dropped 65 percent to 7,600 in the year ending August 2026 compared with the previous year. The figure was also 95 percent below its peak in late 2023. Applications from dependants declined by 35 percent during the same period.
The UK Home Office linked part of the decline to increased scrutiny of healthcare employers and immigration policy changes implemented since 2024. The government has also stopped new overseas recruitment for care worker positions, raised the Immigration Skills Charge paid by employers by 32 percent and increased English-language requirements for several work visa categories.
For Indian nurses who have traditionally looked to the UK for higher pay and specialised career opportunities, these developments have created greater uncertainty. Pradeep said the NHS continues to provide routes into advanced positions, including nurse consultants, nurse practitioners and specialist clinical roles, but financial pressures within the UK's healthcare system have contributed to slower international recruitment.
The changing environment is also prompting some Indian nurses already working in the UK to reconsider their plans. One Kerala nurse, who did not wish to be identified, said increasing living costs, limited career growth and uncertainty over immigration rules are causing some overseas workers to consider returning to India.
Migrant nurses also continue to face concerns related to employer sponsorship and workplace conditions. Pradeep noted that some nurses may be reluctant to report unfair treatment because their immigration status is connected to their sponsoring employer.
The reduction in overseas opportunities could also affect India, particularly Kerala, which has developed a large nursing education ecosystem oriented towards international employment. With fewer migration opportunities, more nurses could remain in India, potentially helping address workforce shortages domestically.
Pradeep said better salaries and working conditions in India could encourage nurses to build their careers at home rather than seek opportunities abroad.
